Lord Jones of Birmingham opens new Calder manufacturing facility

To an invited audience of Calder's customers and suppliers, Lord Jones of Birmingham delivered a keynote speech to celebrate Calder’s 30th anniversary and to mark the opening of their new manufacturing facility in Worcester.

With guests arriving from Norway, Germany, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and a large contingent from neighbouring Scotland, it was a truly international event which gave people the opportunity to view close up the quality of Calder products, and also to catch up with friends and colleagues.

Lord Jones, a former director-general of the CBI and more recently Minister of Trade, outlined in his keynote speech the challenges facing British business against a backdrop of economic decline in Europe and the rise of the Asian and South American economies. Lord Jones spoke passionately about the essential reform urgently needed to grow the UK economy and to improve its competitiveness in today's global markets. Britain excels at value-added manufacturing and while this would play a significant role in Britain's economic recovery the Government needed to engender a more entrepreneurial culture in the UK as well as providing an education system fit to equip the next generation of workers, engineers, innovators and wealth-creators with the right skills.

Ian Calder-Potts, the founder of Calder Ltd, reflected on how the energy and loyalty of his skilled workforce had helped grow the company over the last 30 years to establish it as a trusted name within the high pressure pump industry. Today, Calder exports their equipment to all corners of the world and the move to its new facility will now enable the company to expand its manufacturing activities. As Calder's future lies in value-added manufacturing, Ian Calder-Potts stressed the importance of the Government recognising the need to equip school leavers and students with the right skill-set for the world of work.
