Hydrodemolition Equipment

Our ultra high pressure waterjetting units are ideally suited to the rigours of hydrodemolition. This, coupled with our range of hydrodemolition equipment and accessories, ensures we can supply you with the complete package.

Why Hydrodemolition

Hydrodemolition (or hydrodem) allows the safe, selective removal of concrete using ultra high pressure water. There are myriad reasons for using our hydrodemolition equipment. For instance, greater operator comfort, no damage to rebar, and no damage to underlying structure (no microcracks). Furthermore, hydrodemolition offers the ability to access confined work spaces, and gives increased productivity over traditional techniques.

Water Recycling and Filtration

A huge benefit of hydrodem is that the waste water can be filtered and recycled. The used water is collected and treated for re-use or for safe discharge back to its source. This is particularly useful where water is scarce or the supply suffers from frequent interruptions. However, even where there are no supply issues, recycling water really is the best option for our environment.

Hydrodemolition Case Study and News Items

This hydrodem case study discusses the requirement to remove a section of concrete from the underside of a flyover. The case study explains why hydrodemolition is the best method and why the Calder MultiJet is the right high pressure pump unit for the job. We also have plenty of news items which feature our customers and the hydrodemolition projects they undertake. Type hydrodem into the search box at the top of this page.

The Kariba Dam Rehabilitation project

The Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project will ensure the long-term operation of this magnificent structure that serves the people of Zimbabwe and Zambia. Our Kariba Dam hydrodemolition news item gives a background to the dam and its current condition and describes the hydrodemolition equipment used.

Hydrodemolition Safety Awareness Training

We are members of the Water Jetting Association (WJA). The WJA is a trade association representing contractors, manufacturers, hirers and other organisations in all aspects of high-pressure water jetting and has developed waterjetting codes of practice. Our Life Cycle Services team provide hydrodemolition-specific, Water Jetting Association-approved safety awareness training.

  • Operator friendly – vastly reduced vibrations. No vibration white fingers.
  • Environmentally acceptable – noise and dust dramatically reduced.
  • Creates super bond between old and new concrete.
  • Selective removal, removes damaged concrete. Leaves sound concrete.
  • Rebar is undamaged.
  • Surrounding concrete is not damaged.

Hydrodemolition

  • Creates no micro cracks.
  • Creates super bonding.
  • Rough surface – good bond.
  • Bond strength more than 1,5-2,0 Mpa.
  • Selective removal.
  • Reinforcement not damaged.
  • Good operator environment.
  • Long lasting repair.

Jack hammer

  • Creates micro cracks.
  • Surface with cracks – poor bonding.
  • Bond strength less than 1,0 Mpa.
  • Non-selective removal removes the good as well as the bad concrete.
  • Rebar is damaged.
  • Causes damage/injury to the operators.
  • Repaired concrete will fail again much sooner.

Sweden was the first country to use hydrodemolition technology. Due to the large quantities of salt used to de-ice bridges, they needed a method of concrete removal that had these qualities:

  • Selective removal – remove the bad and leave the good concrete.
  • Rough surface – to achieve a good bonding surface.
  • No micro cracks – cracks are a non-bonding surface.
  • Clean surface – dust and dirt affect bonding.
