the challenge
Calder was approached to design and manufacture two small-footprint, electrically driven, high-pressure Cuttings Re-Injection (CRI) pump packages for offshore applications.
Severe platform space constraints due to escape routes, platform structural steel and a blast wall meant the size of the standard CRI unit would exceed the available footprint.
the solution
The pump could not be changed, and the next largest item was the motor. Standard motors used within the oil & gas industry were too large and Calder had to source alternative motors from other industries. A relatively compact motor was found which is traditionally used in locomotion. We also managed to source a coupling that was ATEX (ATmosphère EXplosible) compliant and would take the torque loading, which gave us an additional reduction of 50mm. Once we had incorporated the revised components we had achieved a 900mm reduction in the overall length of the unit, which the client confirmed was acceptable. We had also rotated the pump gearbox to keep the width of the unit to a minimum.
the result
Through good design, innovation and a can-do attitude, our design team were able to address the challenging space restrictions without compromising on quality or serviceability, utilising existing and new technologies and components from alternative industries. We not only met the process requirements, but within a much smaller footprint than had previously been available in the marketplace.
